Bob Lyons to retire; Dennis DeSousa named to new role
ST. LOUIS, June 9, 2020 – Graybar, a leading distributor of electrical, communications and data networking products and provider of related supply chain management and logistics services, announced today that Regional Vice President Robert C. Lyons will retire on August 1, 2020, after 41 years with the company. Lyons is a member of the company’s Board of Directors, serving on several committees and as a Voting Trustee of the corporation. Upon his retirement, he will step down from his committee responsibilities, as well as his role as a member of Graybar’s Board of Directors and as a Voting Trustee.
Graybar also announced the election of Dennis E. DeSousa to the position of Senior Vice President and General Manager, effective August 1, 2020. DeSousa currently serves as Regional Vice President for the company’s western region, a position he has held since 2017. In his expanded role, he will have responsibility for all of Graybar’s districts, as well as certain subsidiaries.

Two Rivers Electric and Mechanical is a commercial electrical solutions provider based in Clarksville, Tennessee, with a second location in Alabama.
Traditional heavy wire reels were a significant pain point for Two Rivers Electric, which spent a lot of time managing, handling and pulling wire on the jobsite. Without access to a forklift, just moving the wire around required six or more workers, creating a safety issue and a significant time suck on staff.
“It’s very labor intensive to move wire reels around,” said Jeremie Royal, Electrical Estimator at Two Rivers Electric. “There’s always the risk one of our employees could get hurt. And logistically, manpower-wise, it costs a lot of time and money. It used to take six or seven guys three to four hours and that’s to get just one wire pulled.”
Two Rivers needed a better way to move wire and make installation as fast and painless as possible.
HOW GRAYBAR HELPED
Graybar introduced Two Rivers to the SmartReel? portable payout system, and demonstrated how the contractor could realize quicker, pain-free material staging and installation.
“We’re always listening for ways to save man-hours,” said Jeremie. “The Graybar team came in and presented how they could improve our wire pulls. The team said they could set it up so we wouldn’t even have to touch the wire except to install it.”
Ultimately, Graybar set Two Rivers up with SmartReels, as well as A-Frame reels and a mobile trailer onsite for storage.
“All of our setup time was eliminated,” said Jeremie. “The biggest thing is the safety of my employees, and the way Graybar sets up the wire on SmartReels and A-Frames can eliminate that risk.”
It was quick and easy for Two Rivers to switch over to using SmartReels and A-Frames.
“The first day we used SmartReels we had five guys on site and we didn’t even need that many,” said Jeremie. “My guys didn’t need to move the SmartReel as promised and the process went from taking three to four hours to just 35 minutes.”
In addition to saving time, Two Rivers drastically reduced the number of employee hours needed for each wire pull. Instead of needing six or seven workers on site they only needed three.
“We figured out we only needed about three people on the jobsite going forward,” said Jeremie. “It was all too easy compared to what we are used to. Between the hours we save per pull and the fewer employees needed, we can gain almost one percent of the project back.”
It’s also easy for Jeremie’s team to see how much wire they have left. “You can physically see what’s available and let Graybar know what is getting low, and it also makes for a neat presentable appearance on the jobsite,” said Jeremie.
Replenishing materials is another benefit of working with Graybar. The Two Rivers team can reorder what they need right from their smartphones. “I can email Graybar from my phone and let them know what material I need,” said Jeremie. “My employees don’t have to spend time going to the supply house themselves. It puts the supply house to work for me, instead of me working for the supply house.”
“We’ve been using Graybar wire for three years now, and I will go back to them continuously because they make my job easier,” said Jeremie. “No one has been able to touch Graybar on wire, price or service.”

There is a labor shortage across the construction trades, and Graybar wants to help.
The National Electrical Contractors Association says that 7,000 electricians join the electrical industry each year, but more than 10,000 retire.
“With retirement on the horizon for many skilled professionals, the industry is in need of new ways to fill the talent gap,” said Graybar Chairman, President and CEO Kathy Mazzarella. “The lack of skilled workers and a narrow talent pipeline means that projects fall behind, costs rise and companies start to decline opportunities. The Graybar Construction Trades Scholarship allows us to make a positive difference by increasing awareness of careers in the construction trades and removing barriers to entry for young people with financial needs.”
Graybar Construction Trades Scholarship
Launched earlier this year, the Graybar Construction Trades Scholarship is available to high-school students nationwide and aims to reduce the cost of attending a trade school or participating in an apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship program.
Each award recipient of a Graybar Construction Trades Scholarship will receive $1,000, renewable for a second year to total $2,000. Graybar will award up to 50 of these scholarships.
